Academic counseling and career services are available to prospective and current J-School students via the J-School’s Undergraduate Advisor, supported by the Undergraduate Program Coordinator and other J-School faculty and staff. While students at UW are fully responsible for knowing and complying with all requirements for their majors and degrees, the J-School advisor and other faculty and staff can provide expert help based on wide experience inside and outside the university.
Career counseling and other resources for seeking jobs and internships are also available to J-School students via the College of Letters & Science Career Services office (www.lssaa.wisc.edu/careers). L&S Career Services is often a good choice for initial counseling and first drafts of resumes, cover letters and portfolios. After an initial visit to L&S Career Services, the J-School advisor and other faculty and staff can provide further consultation specific to the communication fields.
How to get advising
To access undergraduate advising in the J-School:
- Visit the Undergraduate Advisor’s office at 5060 Vilas Hall during walk-in office hours posted below and on the office door,
- Schedule an appointment online via scheduling assistant (current majors only), or
- Call the J-School office at (608) 263-4898 for an appointment.
Due to the conversational nature of advising and the high volume of emails, students are asked to visit in person for advising. For students off campus or otherwise unable to come in person, appointments can be made via the J-School office for the advisor to call by phone or connect via Skype at a specific time.
Walk-in office hours for the spring 2013 term are:
- Tuesday and Thursday 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Wednesday 2:30-4:30 p.m.
Robert will notify students should these hours change.
With the exception of students applying to the J-School for the first time in the current semester, a dvising is open to all current and prospective UW students – including freshmen, high schoolers and their families, and students at other institutions planning to transfer. Advising is limited to current majors during the first two weeks of each fall and spring semester, as well as during the first week of course registration at mid-semester and the two weeks immediately prior. Outside these peak times, appointments are generally available with minimal notice, and students should encounter only a short (if any) wait for walk-in advising.
Workshops and special walk-in advising hours are provided for students applying to the J-School for the first time. See the J-School application for more details.
