Dear SJMC Class of 2012:
On behalf of the faculty and staff of the School of Journalism & Mass Communication, I write to congratulate you on your graduation!
This weekend you joined a distinguished group of SJMC alumni, stretching back over a century, including authors, creators, editors, innovators, investigators, entrepreneurs, communicators and Pulitzer Prize-winners. We are proud of your accomplishments so far, and we look forward to hearing about your accomplishments in the future! Please keep us updated on your careers, your lives, and your good works in the world, through the magic of social media:

As I mentioned at our in-house graduation reception last Friday, I hope you will all remember that you have an open invitation to return to the School and connect with the next generation of SJMC majors, whether as a classroom visitor, a guest speaker, an employee recruiter, or just a friendly alum giving advice at a student organization meeting. I know that all of you benefited from such alumni visits during your time here, and taking on this role yourself is a great way to “pay it forward” to the great students who will one day follow you out into the world.
Finally, I should mention one more great way to “pay it forward”: making a senior gift of $20.12 in honor of your graduation. If, during your time here, you’ve had the good fortune to work with some of our laptop and tablet technology, to take a course in our newly-renovated “smart classroom,” to attend one of our special lectures from famous visitors like Jeff Greenfield, Laura Miller, Dana Priest, and “Bud” Selig, or to receive a scholarship award from the School, you’ve benefited from the care and goodwill of the alumni who have come before you. Gifts from alumni, especially during tight state budget times, provide UW-Madison and the School of Journalism & Mass Communication with the “margin of excellence” that keeps us at the top of the rankings and preserves the value of your degree for the future.
This year, your gift can do even more good work: All gifts between $20 and $200 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by generous UW-Madison alums John and Tashia Morgridge. You can find out more, and pledge a gift, at http://www.uwseniors.com (and you can even direct your pledge to our School if you like; choose “Other” and type “School of Journalism & Mass Communication”).
Thank you for spending your university years with us here at Madison. And on a personal note, thanks to all of you who made such a wonderful noise at Sunday’s commencement ceremony at the Kohl Center whenever the School of Journalism & Mass Communication was mentioned — Chancellor Ward definitely heard you!
