The American Press Institute is hiring a paid summer intern to support our efforts to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) within news media and to help us research and share best practices in diversity, inclusion and community engagement in journalism.

This person should be a college student or recent graduate with an interest in how to:

  • Improve the way the news industry covers traditionally marginalized communities
  • Help build newsrooms that are inclusive and culturally responsive to the needs of all staff members
  • Help journalists use analytics to better understand their audiences.

This person will work with our Director of Inclusion and Audience Growth. A new area within API, the Inclusion and Audience Growth team works directly with news organizations that want to improve their coverage of communities of color while also creating and sustaining more equitable workplaces. API plans to build its offerings in this area through the use of its new DEIB Index, a tool geared toward helping newsrooms address a multitude of issues affecting newsrooms and the communities they strive to cover. The team also works closely with API’s Table Stakes team and with API’s new Source Matters tool, which helps newsrooms track the diversity of sources within news stories. Opportunities also exist to assist with research in this area and produce content for our newsletter

The intern’s key functions and responsibilities are to:

  • Work with the Inclusion and Audience Growth team to write and share newsroom and industry takeaways around DEIB issues, with an emphasis on newsrooms that partner with API.
  • Research best practices related to DEIB in journalism and assisting with documenting other solid work in DEIB and community engagement in and outside of journalism.
  • Assist with consulting work on DEIB issues performed by API.

The intern may also:

  • Help conduct interviews related to consulting and research work.
  • Assist with work related to API’s Source Matter’s analytics tool.
  • Analyze community and focus group data related to consulting work.
  • Assist other API projects and events, as needed.

We also know there are excellent candidates who might not have all the skills and experience that we have outlined. If that describes you, please apply and tell us about yourself and share your ideas for this role. You may be the ideal candidate.

This position is a full-time (35 hours per week) paid internship for 12 weeks during the summer.  The intern will be paid $25/hour for the duration of the internship. The start date is flexible depending on the intern’s academic calendar but is expected to be on or around June 1.

We prefer candidates who are willing to work out of our office in the D.C. area, but we will consider strong applicants seeking to work remotely.  We will monitor the public health situation as we get closer to the summer to ensure a safe working environment for the intern and staff.
