This reporting position breaks and aggregates news about police, fire and public safety emergencies. Covers emerging news and social media topics or issues that engage our audience and grow traffic. Collects and uses video, photo and social posts to compliment and illustrate coverage. Leverages our Herald-Leader social accounts or other social media into inform readers.


  • Covers and quickly delivers well-written stories and updates about unfolding breaking news events affecting public safety, primarily in Lexington but also in surrounding counties as warranted or assigned.
  • Aggregates breaking or high-interest stories from other published sources with the appropriate care to facts, verification and attribution.
  • Produces originally reported stories on “topics of now” that people are interested in and/or talking about.
  • Able to assess individual results and make ongoing coverage decisions based on readership and other measures.
  • Takes initiative to meet individual and overall traffic-focused goals consistently.
  • Uses social media daily to gather information and to report developments.
  • Produces visuals, including video, from breaking news that can be used on social and on all platforms.
  • Emphasizes accuracy and uses practices that ensure accuracy.
  • Adopts the best search engine optimization approaches as shared by company experts and editors.
  • Cultivates and turns to sources for tips, insight and context.
  • Demonstrates willingness to learn about topics affecting the beat along with technology and journalism.
  • Generates photo and graphics assignments where necessary. Produces centerpiece stories and packages on a regular basis.
  • Aware of the types of documents available to enhance reporting and able to employ the Freedom of Information Act to obtain them.
  • Must be a team player, able to collaborate across departments and roles.


Skills:  Should be proficient in writing, reporting, spelling, grammar, interviewing and organizationShould be proficient in the use of mobile devices and cameras to produce technically sound, well-composed visuals. Should also be proficient with video editing softwareComputer-assisted reporting skills are a major asset. Should be proficient in use of mobile digital equipment, with a capacity to learn and grow in use of multimedia. Must have access to reliable transportation and valid driver’s license.

Abilities: Ability to take direction well; ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; ability to get along with people and interact well with the public; ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time; ability to enter and exit vehicle.

EDUCATION: College degree

EXPERIENCE: 1-year daily newspaper or equivalent

EQUIPMENT UTILIZED: Computer, laptop, tabletphonecamera; vehicle
