Description
Clean Lakes Alliance seeks two LTE Clean Boats, Clean Waters Educators to join our passionate and dedicated team. Clean Lakes Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit devoted to improving the water quality of area lakes, streams, and wetlands in the Yahara River Watershed. Working closely with government agencies, waterway user groups, local businesses, farmers, and riparian property owners, our organization serves as a positive voice in promoting the protection and improvement of our cherished lakes. Position Description:
Clean Boats, Clean Waters Educators will play a vital role in the implementation of our aquatic invasive species (AIS) program. Educators will receive training so they are prepared to engage with boaters about AIS, share simple precautions that can help prevent their spread, and provide courtesy boat inspections to help find and remove any attached aquatic hitchhikers. The timeframe of employment is from mid-May through September, with some flexibility based on candidate availability.
Additional Responsibilities:
• Provide information to recreational boaters and anglers regarding Wisconsin laws designed to control the spread of AIS.
• Collect and record data on standard Wisconsin DNR reporting forms in accordance with the WI Clean Boats, Clean Waters program.
• Accurately enter collected data into the WI Clean Boats, Clean Waters database on a weekly basis.
• Preserve any specimens that are suspected to be a new AIS.
• Document and report any observed violations of the AIS transport rules.
• Assist in training potential volunteers on Clean Boats, Clean Water protocols.
• Share information about other Clean Lakes Alliance initiatives to raise awareness, increase volunteerism, empower individual action, and help advocate for projects and policies that benefit our lakes.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Ideal candidates will have training, background, or interest in environmental science education, ecosystem management, communications, or similar fields.
• Have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license, a good driving record, and access to a vehicle.
• Have access to a computer with internet access for weekly uploading of data to the Clean Boats, Clean Waters database.
• Friendly, outgoing, and able to approach strangers to initiate brief conversations.
• Self-motivated, reliable, and able to perform duties with limited supervision.
• Must be able to work a variety of early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays in outdoor settings. Such work hours will be scheduled to coincide with peak boat landing traffic whenever possible.
• Must be physically able to inspect watercraft and trailers that may involve repetitive kneeling and bending.
Compensation and Hours:
At least 12 – 20 hours per week from mid-May through September, with flexible schedule options. Must be available to work most weekends and on holidays.
Most work occurs outdoors at boat landings located at Marshall Park, Warner Park, Olbrich Park, and Olin Park. Some computer work will be required each week.
• Pay rate: $19 per hour.
• Mileage reimbursement for travel to the assigned boat landings is provided.
