The Department of Geography is hiring a Communications Intern to help with social media channels, develop and publish news stories on the website, and assist with other department communications.

About Geography: For nearly a century, UW-Madison has been home to one of the top ranked Geography departments in the nation. Our Geography program is organized into four major thematic areas: physical geography, people-environmental studies, human geography, and cartography & GIS.

About the Internship: The Communications Intern will assist the work of the Department’s External Relations Committee with maintaining a strong social media presence via Facebook and Twitter; helping to author interesting content/stories on the department website’s blog, and assisting in the design of monthly news digest emails and alumni newsletters.

This is a fantastic opportunity to engage with Geography’s faculty, staff, and students – to help amplify the research, instruction, and outreach activities happening during the academic year.

The Intern will work closely with key staff on the External Relations Committee, and training on all software platforms and applications will be provided.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Interest in social media and communications outreach
• Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work independently
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills
• Currently enrolled at UW-Madison

Qualifications: This position requires familiarity with social media platforms; familiarity with WordPress is a plus (training will be provided)

Anticipated Start Date: October 2022

Anticipated Time Commitment: up to 10 hours per week

Salary: $12 per hour

Location: This position offers a mix of on-site hours (in Science Hall) and remote/independent work.

Schedule: On-site hours will take place Monday-Friday between 9:00am and 4:00pm (days/times can be based around your schedule). Remote hours are flexible.
**Note: some social media work may happen outside 9-5 and/or scheduled work hours.
