Interested in honing your education journalism skills at a dynamic, mission-driven news outlet covering the most urgent crisis facing America today? Apply for The 74’s paid editorial fellowship.
This position provides extensive backgrounding in today’s education story lines and policy debates, plus experience in researching, reporting, writing, audience development and web content management. The editorial fellow is a key point person on our engagement team: you’ll develop web production, newsletter and social media skills before a daily audience of 250,000+ readers. Past fellows have gone on to full-time positions at The 74, as well as such national outlets as The Chronicle of Higher Education and EdSurge.
The position will be managed through our NYC engagement team, although because our newsroom will in all likelihood remain hybrid for a good portion of 2023, we’re considering candidates from anywhere in the United States available during typical East Coast hours (10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.)
Fellowships typically run 12 months, but can be modified shorter based on candidate preference. The selected applicant will start work sometime between July 15 and September 1, 2023. This is a paid contractor position, with a monthly stipend of $3,750.
Please send cover letters and resumes to: CAREERS@THE74MILLION.ORG
Our fellows are fully involved members of the newsroom who pitch stories, collaborate with reporters, work with videographers and are mentored by award-winning editors. You’ll emerge a stronger digital reporter with a bevy of clips.
Fellows also assist with special projects — from breaking news to event planning to book publishing — and work with our engagement team to optimize layouts for reader retention, multimedia content for impact and social media pages for sharing. They will also assist with our growing newsletter efforts and audience, in developing new strategies for regularly engaging with our growing base of members and subscribers.
The position will be roughly divided between these two sides of the newsroom, with 60% of hours spent on editorial production and promotion efforts, and 40% of hours spent on developing reporting and writing skills.
While this position reports to New York-based editors, the fellow will have the chance to collaborate with seasoned journalists around the country, including our Washington, D.C., team and 74 contributors in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Texas and beyond.
