Treasure Coast Newspapers/, part of the USA Today Network, is seeking a reporter to cover education in its own three-county area as well as across Florida. The beat, however, isn’t only to cover school board meetings. Rather, it puts a premium on insightful enterprise and investigations.

The successful candidate will keep tabs on the school boards in Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties, but won’t write about process. This reporter will use those meetings to help identify topics that resonate with readers, digging into issues and not settling for simplistic answers from educational bureaucrats. This reporter will tell those stories in engaging and innovative ways and on a variety of digital and print platforms. This reporter also will become conversant with statewide education issues and focus much of our coverage on the intersection of education and politics, a current flashpoint in Florida. In addition, this reporter will be expected to communicate and collaborate with education reporters at the 17 other USA TODAY Network – Florida newspapers.

This multimedia journalist should be experienced in using social media both in reporting and in promoting his/her stories. This reporter should be adept at source development; have experience using public records, databases and other digital-focused tools; bring a rock-solid knowledge of AP style; and demonstrate a proven ability to meet daily and weekend deadlines.

This job is based in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The reporter will be required to cover education from northern Indian River County to southern Martin County.

Requirements include:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent education.
Previous education coverage and at least three years of experience at a daily newspaper or equivalent media are preferred.
