Founded as a streetwear blog in 2005, Highsnobiety has grown into a publisher, retailer, creative consultancy, and brand that employs 275 team members worldwide. As a company rooted in a culture that was trail blazed by the Black community, we hold a deep sense of gratitude toward that community and the creative minds who have built the culture in which we operate.
We have founded the Highsnobiety Writers Fellowship as a way of providing resources and access to emerging writers who strive to define the future of style, music, art, design, and the other disciplines that comprise our cultural landscape. The fellowship is specifically for writers who aspire to critique the status quo and push our industry’s conversation forward, whether that’s through speaking truth to power or championing emerging designers or artists, or all of the above. In a world saturated with information, voices who analyze, critique, and connect the dots have become more important than ever.
This is a prize for students and unpublished writers with or without an advanced degree alike. We believe in giving opportunities and supporting the career growth of writers irrespective of their educational background, as evidenced by the fact that many of the Highsnobiety editorial staff are self-taught and did not receive a journalism degree. The fellowship is anchored by an apprenticeship working alongside our editorial team in New York City, the kind of “on the job” education that taught many of those on our team how to do what we do.
At a time when it has never been more difficult to live professionally as a writer, the aim is to offer support for an aspiring writer to publish their work, experiment with new ideas, and develop their critical voice. Career development will be a focus of the experience, with fellows receiving priority consideration for long-term positions within our own staff.
DETAILS
The 6-month fellowship will be based out of Highsnobiety’s New York City office and includes the following:
- 6 months housing stipend
- A paid apprenticeship as a member of Highsnobiety’s NYC News Team
- A four-week residency at Highsnobiety HQ in Berlin, Germany
QUALIFICATIONS
- Applicants must be 21 years of age or over
- Legally authorized to work in the US for an employer
- Have a valid passport with at least one year left before expiration date
