Organization Description: The Ceiba Foundation for Tropical Conservation is a small Madison-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting threatened tropical ecosystems. Ceiba (pronounced “Say-ba”) has multiple ongoing projects in Ecuador, including habitat conservation, reserve management, and local and international field education programs, as well as rural development and teacher training. Our U.S. office is in Madison, WI but most of our project staff work out of our office in Quito, Ecuador.
We are seeking a Communications Intern with background and skills in marketing, writing, social media, web design, and/or graphic arts to assist in creating content and engaging our U.S. and Ecuadorian audiences, including donors, stakeholders, alumni, organizational partners, the board of directors, and other audiences. The intern will participate in brainstorming media content; produce and edit content particularly infographics, reels, stories, and videos that promote our work; post to our social media in accordance with our communications plan; produce and distribute our email newsletters; update our website; create and distribute marketing materials for study abroad and EduTour programs; and engage with Ceiba in meetings, study abroad fairs, and other events. Are you a good fit?
We are seeking someone who shares our heartfelt commitment to environmental conservation, and wants to learn how a small nonprofit works. The candidate will want to apply their communications background to help a small environmental organization grow and succeed. The ideal candidate will have a recent B.A. or B.S. in a communications, marketing, graphic design, or journalism related field, and be creative, self-motivated, outgoing, detail-oriented, and organized. Strong background in written and graphic communication skills are a must for this position; familiarity with the country of Ecuador and with the work of Ceiba Foundation is a plus. Spanish language ability preferred. Applicants must have a demonstrated history of managing time efficiently and working independently and reliably with intermittent supervision.

Specific Qualifications:
Besides in the qualities described under above, we seek a Communications Intern with background or skills
- ability to commit ~10 hours per week for at least 3 months
- familiarity with desktop and online publishing, graphic design and video editing application (Adobe products such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, or similar apps)
- proficiency managing social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Facebook)
- experience with website management (WordPress, basic html)
- excellent oral and written public communication skills, particularly related to science and the environment
- creativity, attention to detail, and a high level of productivity even when working from home
- willing to learn the communication needs of an environmental non-profit organization
- Spanish language ability strongly preferred
Hours & Office: The intern may work in our downtown Madison office or may work from home for part of the time, however they will be expected to meet at least once per week with their immediate supervisor in our Madison office. Remote work (via zoom, WhatsApp, Skype) has always played a large role in Ceiba’s operations, as nearly all our staff are in Ecuador.
