The Allen Centennial Garden at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a public garden, outdoor classroom, and artful living laboratory showcasing exceptional and sustainable ornamental horticulture.

The Garden is seeking an energetic and highly motivated student with strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills to fill the position of Photography and Design Intern.

About the Position

Reporting to the Garden Director, the Photography and Design Intern will develop digital and printed materials that use photography and graphic design to effectively communicate the Garden’s brand. The intern will be responsible for capturing photos of the Garden on a day-to-day basis and for documenting events. The intern will also design posters, stickers, and other graphics for Garden marketing and events. In addition, volunteers play a crucial role in the ongoing development support of the Garden, and the intern will be expected to work with Garden volunteers on a regular basis.

Compensation and Schedule:

  • Duration: May 16, 2022–August 12, 2022
  • Compensation: $13/hour 
  • Schedule: Summer 2022: 30 hours/week with occasional weekend and evening hours; Part-time, March–May and August–October


  • Design posters, stickers, digital content, and printed materials that effectively communicate the Garden’s brand
  • Document seasonal changes and Garden plants 
  • Capture and edit photos of signature Garden events 
  • Provide content for website and social media 
  • Manage your own project list to ensure projects are completed on time and meet Garden needs
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with all Garden staff and volunteers 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Preferred Experience:

  • Coursework and/or practical experience in graphic design for web and print
  • Landscape, macro, and event photography experience
  • Photography editing 
  • Access to photography equipment, photo editing software, and graphic design software. 


  • High attention to detail in all work 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Collaborative style
  • Willing to take hands-on approach where needed
  • Available for evening and weekend events and programs as needed
