Would you like to work with world-class journalists at a digital media company seeking to reinvent the way it covers news and reaches readers?
The San Francisco Chronicle is looking for a reporting intern to join our sports journalists for an exciting summer of covering Bay Area teams and the issues that surround them. This paid, 12-week intern will hit the ground running, covering a variety of stories from the office and in the field, but will also receive training and mentoring, and a working knowledge of the complexity of a modern digital news operation. Breaking news and game-day stories will be a focus, but there will be opportunities to pursue other topics, data-driven and enterprise stories depending on interest and experience. The ideal candidate will hustle and compete to be first on a story, while engaging readers through social media, visuals, graphics and alternative story forms. We need someone with high standards, curiosity and empathy who can collaborate and is comfortable providing and taking feedback.
All college students, including community college students or students who will have recently completed their associate’s or bachelor’s degree, are encouraged to apply.
This position will be full-time, based in the Bay Area. Weekend, evening and holiday work may be required as news and games warrant. This paid 12-week internship typically begins in June and lasts through August, but there is some flexibility to accommodate college schedules.
- Receive training and mentoring from editors and colleagues across departments.
- Work and train within a cohort of more than a dozen summer interns.
- Report and write news articles for The Chronicle and SFChronicle.com that reflect the diversity of experiences and coverage of multiple sports teams in the Bay Area.
What we’re looking for:
- Overall: Someone eager to find and chase good stories, while engaging readers through compelling headlines, visuals, graphics and other multimedia. Strong writing skills are important, as is a strict dedication to accuracy, fairness and inclusiveness.
- Newsroom experience: Strong college publication experience or previous internships preferred, but not required.
