What’s the news organization like?
The Austin American-Statesman delivers digital-savvy, breaking, and in-depth coverage of Central Texas news and entertainment. In 2019, our newsroom received more than two dozen awards from the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors, Headliners Foundations, Lone Star Emmys and more. We value how stories and content appear in both print and online and strive to engage our readers across all mediums.

What about your intern programs?
During the fall and spring semesters, we select four part-time interns. During the summer, we have four full-time interns. All internships are designed for college students pursuing a career in journalism.

Fall and Spring semesters: During the school year, we look for Central Texas college students interested in gaining experience in an active newsroom. Interns work in departments such as news, business, features, sports, photography and multimedia. and digital. We pay $8 per hour for up to 180 hours per semester.

Summer interns: From a nationwide pool of candidates, we select four full-time interns seeking front-line experience in news, business, features and sports reporting, still and video photography, and digital. Our program pays $450 a week for 11 weeks, and we provide housing near the newspaper at St. Edward’s University.

What do interns do?
Interns will work alongside full-time staff members, pitching, reporting and creating content for our print and digital products. Though interns will be assigned to coverage teams, our goal is to foster an environment where students can develop their skills, and pursue their interests in a professional setting.

Who can apply?
Undergraduate and graduate college students. Recent graduates may also apply. You don’t have to be a journalism or communications major, but college newsroom experience or a previous internship is a plus. We look for a good academic record, strong desire to be a journalist, and work samples that show talent and promise. Interns are required to have a valid driver’s license, transportation and proof of insurance. Our interns have come from all over the country.

How do I apply?
Email us a resume, cover letter, 2-3 page autobiography, work samples, and at least two references with phone numbers. Your cover letter should say which department you’re most interested in working with (i.e. local news reporting), and which internship period you are applying for.
