The function of the Upham Woods Communication and Outreach Intern position is to create and execute content that aligns with Upham Woods’s social media strategic outreach, engage with target audiences, and monitor metrics to seek opportunities for growth and improvement. The intern will act as a collaborative member of the communications team while taking a leadership role on special projects.

The primary responsibilities of the position are:
• 30% – Develop scientific communication materials including digital and printed publications, blog posts and YouTube videos related to ongoing research efforts. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=894hR-4WTgM
• 30% – Design and produce original, digital promotional materials to be used across communications platforms, including posters, social media posts, webpages, etc.
• 20% – Assist with a variety of communications related to community and special event planning, marketing, logistics, and evaluation feedback
• 20% – Other marketing support tasks and/or communications and advancement tasks assigned as needed and based on interest in developing specific skill sets

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, specifically with writing and editing
• Be creative, collaborative, and eager to learn
• Ability to be flexible, motivated, and open to feedback during the design process
• Ability to be self-directed and manage multiple projects with limited supervision

Qualifications:
• Enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the Fall 2023 semester
• Have experience with outdoor education, natural resources or summer camps, and a desire to spend time outside in a variety of weather conditions
• Have experience producing graphic design materials and utilizing social media accounts
• Have experience with or willingness to learn WordPress and video/audio editing software
• One (minimum) to three (maximum) portfolio pieces (ex. graphic or web design, writing or video work samples)
• Employment will require a criminal background check
