Ellie Fan Yang is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on optimizing media technology and message effects to improve well-being. By applying computational and conventional approaches, she observes digital communication patterns among the targeted populations and provides insight into strategic communication. She also specializes in social and mobile media analytics. Her work has been published in the International Journal of CommunicationJournal of Health CommunicationChinese Journal of CommunicationJournal of Geovisualization and Spatial Analysis, and Journal of General Internal Medicine, among others. Her recent paper Expression in an Online Support Forum: Machine Learning, Communication Style, and Recovery Trajectorieswon the Top Paper Award at the 2021 National Communication Association (NCA)’s Mass Communication Division. Prior to joining the Ph.D. program, she worked professionally as an online video editor for a popular show, “Night Talk”, at a Chinese video website for two years, in which she was in charge of 45 episodes. She received her B.A. in the School of Journalism at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, and her MPhil in Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University.
