Margarita holds a BA in Mass Communication and a MA in Journalism. She has a special interest in Latin America, particularly, in topics related to political communication, media effects, public opinion, and deliberation in conflict contexts. As a doctoral student of her Department, she is a member of two research groups on International Communication and on Physiology & Communication Effects. She is also a member of the Elections Center in the Department of Political Science. In those groups she is working on projects that study the relationships between communication, ideology and deliberation in multiple media and contexts. Her work experience is not limited to the academic environment. She is currently a columnist at Semana Magazine, one of the most important publications in Colombia. She has also worked as a journalist in Chile and Argentina, and as International Fellow for Journalism and Democracy at the Kettering Foundation in Dayton Ohio.
