About the Residency:
City Bureau, a nonprofit civic journalism lab, is seeking early- to mid-career reporters for a full-time Civic Reporting Residency based in Chicago, starting in March 2020.
Over the course of the year, Residents will cover a news beat by engaging with communities most impacted by that topic and working directly with them to develop and create critical news and information resources. Residents will receive holistic training and practical experience in City Bureau’s unique community-driven journalism processes by participating in all three City Bureau programs: Documenters, Reporting Fellowship and the Public Newsroom.
Applicants must pitch a topic they would like to cover over the course of a year that is newsworthy, timely and directly impacts communities on Chicago’s South and West Sides. (Note: Sociopolitical topics only—no arts/culture.) Once selected, Residents will work closely with City Bureau’s Editorial Director and Managing Editor to hone that beat and develop editorial projects in three phases.
• Phase 1: Residents will work with City Bureau’s Documenters program to pitch a special project, coordinate a group of Documenters (engaged citizens who are trained in basic reporting skills) to complete the project and publish its results.
• Phase 2: Residents will work with City Bureau’s Public Newsroom team to host at least one live event to invite discussion, debate and critical feedback on the Resident’s reporting.
• Phase 3: Residents will manage a team of Reporting Fellows as part of City Bureau’s 11-week Fellowship program, to create a major editorial product that directly serves the needs of people impacted by the reporting topic; the reporting team will also work with high-school-aged youth media mentees once a week.
About Us: City Bureau’s mission is to bring journalists and communities together in a collaborative spirit to produce equitable media coverage, encourage civic participation and hold powerful forces to account. We expect Residents to work toward that mission and uphold our Core Values and Community Engagement Guidelines while producing the invaluable journalism and civic work for which we are known.
