Description

Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) Producers on The Morning Show are part of a dynamic team that helps to bring issues of importance and interest to WPR listeners. Collaborate with and produce shows/related web content on The Ideas Network as assigned. Research and pitch topics, pre-interview and schedule guests, prepare background materials, call-screen and direct the flow of the live broadcast, and write related web content. Work with executive producers, hosts, producers and editors, communicate with guests and develop fresh topics and segment ideas. This position reports to the executive producer of The Morning Show.

Principal Duties:
1. Keep current on issues of importance and interest to WPR listeners, including Wisconsin-specific topics.
2. Develop show ideas, schedule guests and provide host with background research and interview questions.
3. Produce live shows, including screening listener phone calls, emails and social media interactions.
4. Direct live shows, including working on the flow of the program with the host. Coordinate audience engagement and transitions.
5. Participate in daily editorial meetings to discuss and review topics and guests.
6. Participate actively in regular pitch meetings, including bringing own pitches for consideration and providing feedback to other team members.
7. Write engaging website content for The Ideas Network on WPR.org and social media.
8. Effectively engage diverse perspectives and experiences in work products and in organizational interactions. Demonstrate respect for others in all workplace relationships. Support an equitable, diverse and inclusive work environment.
9. Uphold and maintain the standards of journalistic ethics and excellence described in Ethical Guidelines for Editorial Staff: https://www.wpr.org/wpr-ethical-guidelines.
10. Know, follow and contribute to WPR production best practices.
11. Other duties as assigned.

Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication or related field preferred. If no degree, a minimum of two years of full-time experience in journalism is required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:
• One year of full-time experience in broadcast journalism or related field; three years of full-time experience is required to be hired at the No-Prefix level; seven years of full-time experience is required at the Senior level.
• Proven record of success in meeting tight deadlines and managing multiple priorities, as well as strict attention to detail.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Firm foundation in journalism ethics.
• Ability to work efficiently and effectively – independently, as part of a team and cross-departmentally.

Not Required but Desirable Qualifications:
• Knowledge of Wisconsin.
• Knowledge of AP Style.
• Experience in live, call-in radio.
