In these positions, student(s) will be working with the NASA Health and Air Quality Applied Sciences Team (HAQAST,, the UW-Madison Energy Analysis and Policy (EAP, graduate certificate program, and/or The Holloway Group (

All three of these programs share the goal of connecting with wide audiences and have a public outreach mission. The digital communication intern(s) will work with Prof. Tracey Holloway – involved in all three of these projects – and either Dr. Daegan Miller (HAQAST) or Dr. John Greenler (EAP). The skills needed for all positions are similar, and could be filled by one full-time intern or up to three part-time interns.

NASA HAQAST is a 3-year research and outreach initiative funded by NASA Applied Sciences. HAQAST is comprised of a collaborative team that works in partnership with public health and air quality agencies to use NASA data and tools for the public benefit, and is led by Professor Tracey Hollowayat the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE) at UW-Madison.

The EAP graduate certificate program gives students the knowledge and skills needed to become leaders in industry, government, non-profits, and other roles in the energy field. It is the only energy-related graduate certificate at UW-Madison. The EAP program is affiliated with both SAGE and the Wisconsin Energy Institute of UW-Madison.

The Holloway Group, also led by Professor Tracey Holloway, models weather, climate, emissions, and air quality using state-of-the-art methods.

Job Summaries:
Looking for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, or recent graduates with graphic design, web design, and/or science communications interest and experience.

Activities will include:
• Newsletter layout
• Website design and updating
• Assisting with event planning
• Videography
• Posting to program social media channels
• Assisting with event planning
• Communicating research outcomes
• Other general occasional tasks to assist faculty and staff

Applicants will:
1. Support the NASA Health and Air Quality Applied Sciences Team (HAQAST) by working closely with HAQAST Team Lead Prof. Tracey Holloway and HAQAST Communications Coordinator Dr. Daegan Miller. This is a 20 hour/week position.
2. Support the EAP graduate certificate program by helping Prof. Tracy Holloway and Dr. John Greenler (EAP Engagement Director) to plan campus events, advertise and promote the program, maintain the program website, and get students on campus excited about the future of energy analysis and policy. This is a 10 hour/week position.
3. Support the Holloway Group, led by Tracey Holloway, with general communication and outreach tasks. This is a 10 hour/week position.

Pay scale ranges from $12-$15 per hour for a student hourly, or $30,000 to $33,000 per year base rate for a full-time (non-student) intern, depending on qualifications. The schedules are flexible during normal business hours (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday).

Knowledge and Skills:
• Familiarity with graphic design, image editing, and layout software (e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud, or similar).
• Experience in video creation and editing and/or website design.
• Experience in art and/or visual communication.
• Ability to work collaboratively and respond to feedback, as well as independently.
• Creative vision, as shown through examples of past work (personal website, class work, past volunteer or job-related work).
• Excellent communication skills.
• An interest in science communication.
