Carlos Dávalos is a Ph.D. student, teaching assistant, and project assistant at UW-Madison’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. In 2017 Carlos received an MA degree from UT Austin’s Ethnomusicology Department for his work on Mexico’s hip-hop scene. In 2009 he received a professional MA from UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism for his work on Mexico City’s illegal, underground drug-rehab facilities —anexos. Mexico’s society and popular culture influence his main academic research agenda. Primary interests are the influence of U.S. mass media & mainstream culture in the configuration of Mexican identity. Cultural, postcolonial, and media imperialism studies are also central interests. Previously, Carlos was a journalist in Mexico City and taught at the Communications Department in Mexico City’s Universidad Iberoamericana. He also publishes independent records and books.
