Juwon Hwang is a Ph.D. candidate in the SJMC at UW-Madison specializing in applying emerging communication technologies to improve psychological well-being. Juwon’s research focuses on examining the roles of online social engagement in mitigating the development of depression among those who have similar health issues such as cancer, aging, and alcohol use disorders. Her dissertation examines whether individual communication is affected by the specific norm that a group is creating at any given moment in online social support groups. Another line of her research interest lies in exploring the effects of various health information sources, including social media, on perceptions and behaviors in relation to vaccination. Her most recent published work appears in Health Communication and investigates the mechanisms through which parents form perceptions of vaccination benefits and decisions to maintain vaccination schedules for their children.
