Name: Jess Miller
Expected Graduation Date: May 2025
A central component of our Professional Master’s program is the development of a specialty in journalism. Students have the opportunity to take classes outside of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication to explore their interests and develop skills in a particular area which is exactly why current Professional M.A. student Jess Miller chose to apply. Miller has taken advantage of the program’s flexibility to dive deeper into his passion for storytelling and learn about a wide range of topics. He shares more about his work and advice for future SJMC graduate students.
Why did you choose Madison and the SJMC for graduate school?
I never thought much about journalism as an undergraduate. I majored in English, but I was more interested in creative writing. I actually moved to Madison from Virginia in 2021 to work for Epic as a recruiter. Interviewing candidates made me realize I had a passion for people and stories that I wanted to explore more as a journalist. I chose the SJMC because of the flexibility of the program — I had no idea what kind of journalism I wanted to do — and because I was already impressed with Madison’s local journalism scene.
What is the focus of your reporting in your recent or current work?
I’m currently an audio production intern at American Public Media, so I’ve been working on their Brains On! universe of educational podcasts for kids. I helped write an episode about how fast sneezes travel, which was a ton of fun. In Madison, I report local news for WORT and contribute the occasional story to Madison Magazine. So I guess if there’s a “focus” of my reporting, it’s “whatever interests me!”
What do you hope to do after you graduate?
I’d love to continue working in public broadcasting, either audio or video. And I’d love to stay in Madison! But realistically, I’ll be happy if I can make a living telling stories and making connections with people.
What advice do you have for students hoping to attend the SJMC for their graduate degree?
Have an idea of what you want to do, but never be shy about following your curiosity. During grad school, I’ve taken classes on organic agriculture, art history, and urban planning, and come out with some amazing stories because of it.
Any fun facts or hobbies you’d like to share?
In addition to my studies, I volunteer as a sailing instructor with the Hoofer Sailing Club — an amazing resource for anyone who wants to learn to sail on Lake Mendota!
