Description
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication is seeking to fill up to two fellowship positions for the fall semester 2025, with the possible extension through the spring semester 2026. Fellows will support SJMC in promoting the undergraduate program to prospective students and families, helping students apply to SJMC, and serving as an ambassador of the School. The fellows will support the Undergraduate Academic Advisors in managing student admissions and prospective student events and meetings.
Responsibilities and Duties:
• Participate in fall and spring info sessions (in-person and Zoom; 3-4 sessions per semester)
• Attend Your UW Days (4 sessions in spring semester)
• Provide one-on-one support to prospective students
o Review prospective student resumes and statements of purpose
o Hold group sessions regarding resumes/statements of purpose for prospective students
• Promote admissions events across campus (student groups, social media support, messaging to high school newspapers in Madison/Milwaukee/Chicagoland)
• Conduct prospective student tours at Vilas Hall (most likely to fall on Monday/Friday mornings/afternoons)
• Attend major/certificate fairs across campus (like the Communication Majors fair and the Non-Business Majors fair in the fall)
• Attend and assist at the Advertising & Communications Career Fair
• Help promote scholarships to students (SJMC scholarships and summer internship scholarships)
• Serve as a career ambassador to help promote career events and attend events when possible
Number of Hours/Week/Stipend:
• 5-10 hours week (work is not guaranteed each week – need is on a week-by-week basis with heavier need in October through November and February through April)
• Fellows will receive an hourly wage of $15/hour
Benefits to Fellows:
• Fellows will be provided with professional and academic development, including mentoring and guidance from the Undergraduate Academic Advisor
• Fellows will develop brand ambassador skills, as well as relevant public relations skills
Qualifications:
• Current SJMC students
• Completed at least one semester in SJMC
• Communication skills (including writing, public speaking, marketing/branding) and the ability to present to groups of students
• Dependable, reliable, flexible, as hours may shift based upon events
• Ability to work with other students
• Preference will be given to students who serve as a fellow for the entire academic year
