Laila Abbas is a second year Ph.D. student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she studies digital activism, visual communication, and political communication with a focus on how social and political movements use audiovisual platforms to mobilize publics. Her work has appeared at the International Journal of Communication, Online Media and Global Communication and Women’s Studies in Communication. She has presented her research at leading conferences including ICA and AEJMC, where she has also received multiple recognitions. Her awards include the ICA Top Dissertation Award Honorable Mention, the Top Student Paper and Kappa Tau Alpha awards from AEJMC’s Visual Communication Division, and the Second Place Student Paper from AEJMC’s Political Communication Division.
