Description
The full-time Communications Manager position directly contributes to the vitality and sustainability of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin (LWVWI) by developing and managing internal and external communications with local Leagues, partners, and press contacts in Wisconsin and nationally. This position is ideal for a creative, dynamic, and outcome-driven individual seeking a chance to contribute to impactful voting rights organization. The Communications Manager will report to the Executive Director and work closely with the Board, other staff and coalition partners to coordinate internal and external messaging in alignment with strategic plans and overall organizational priorities.
This person will be responsible for supporting day-to-day internal and external communications needs, including but not limited to: media outreach; social media channels; website development and updating; biweekly emails to local Leagues, volunteers and other supporters; quarterly newsletter; and our online, internal database for local Leagues.
The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a nonpartisan organization committed to empowering voters and defending democracy. Founded in 1920, the LWV has a rich history of advocating for voter rights, informed and active participation in government, and influencing public policy through education and advocacy. The LWV works to ensure that all eligible voters, particularly those from traditionally
underrepresented or marginalized communities, have the opportunity and the information to exercise their right to vote. The organization also focuses on key issues such as election protection, voter education, redistricting, judicial independence, and infrastructure, all with the goal of fostering a vibrant and inclusive democracy.
Internal Communications Duties:
• Manage websites and social media channels
• Develop and disseminate visual and written content for digital channels, adhering to brand standards and tailoring to each platform’s specifications.
• Determine and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for social media and compile reports when necessary.
• Oversee the development and execution of compelling digital marketing campaigns tied to key moments throughout the electoral cycle.
• Develop and execute advertising campaigns on digital platforms and other advertising venues (often in both Spanish and English).
• Assist in preparing remarks, talking points, and communications guidance for staff, Board members, and local League leadership.
• Draft and disseminate email copy, action alerts, and messaging strategies on key impact issues to members and supporters.
• Support staff in drafting and submitting testimony and statements to the legislature and relevant committees.
• Coordinate rapid response messaging with staff, board members, and partners.
External Communication Duties:
• Represent the organization and actively participate in coalition and partner meetings and projects.
• Lead the development, implementation, and execution of an integrated communications strategy that delivers impactful messaging across all public communications channels.
• Create and maintain media relations; draft and disseminate press releases and statements to media contacts.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires knowledge by certification, experience or course work pertaining to communications, or any equivalent combination of experience or training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
• Commitment to the League’s mission and a passion for voting rights and civic engagement
• Communications experience, preferably in nonprofit and advocacy work.
• Innovative, proactive, self-starter, compelling, driven, and out-of-the-box thinker.
• Ability to be flexible, work under pressure, and adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic changing environment and manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts clearly and effectively to internal and external audiences.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Proficiency with Google Suite
• Working knowledge of Associated Press Style, including commitment to evolving changes.
• Experience with basic website design, email software (e.g., MailChimp), and web content management tools desired.
• Conversant with data analytics and the ability to draw actionable insights.
• Regular access to a reliable computer, internet signal, and cellphone.
• Willing to travel occasionally as needed.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
• Background in strategic communications, media relations, and political and/or issues campaigns experience desired.
• Spanish language skills are a bonus.
