Luhang Sun (she/her) is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UW–Madison, with minors in Gender and Women’s Studies and Educational Psychology (Quantitative Methods).

Luhang’s research lies at the intersection of feminist media studies, communication technologies, and computational social science. Specifically, she studies how gender dynamics and gender (in)justice are mediated and complicated by communication technologies, such as digital platforms and AI technologies. Her work spans two interconnected lines of research:

  1. auditing and analyzing gender injustice, bias, and antagonism perpetuated by digital technologies, and
  2. investigating prosocial media effects to develop feminist interventions.

Luhang’s work has appeared in scholarly journals including Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Feminist Media Studies, and Social Media + Society. Her research has also been recognized with the AEJMC First Place Top Student Paper Award in 2022.

Luhang earned her B.A. in Sociology from Communication University of China in 2017, and her M.A. in Journalism and Communication at Peking University in 2020.
