SJMC Students Recognized by the Milwaukee Press Club for Outstanding Work

On Monday, March 19, the Milwaukee Press Club announced the finalists for their 88th Annual Milwaukee Press Club Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism Contest, honoring an abundance of SJMC students.

Each year, hundreds of collegiate and professional journalists enter the competition in the hopes of being recognized by the Milwaukee Press Club for their extraordinary work. The competition is judged by professional journalists from press clubs throughout the United States. Many students in the SJMC were honored for their work, a majority coming from classes taught by professors Stacy Forster and Pat Hastings.

Forster’s Magazines and Magazine Journalism class produces Curb magazine each year, and this year the publication was nominated twelve times in a variety of categories including Best Long Hard Feature Story, Best Sports Story and Best Still Photograph/Photos in the collegiate category.

Meanwhile, student work from Pat Hastings’ classes, including her Video Journalism, Long Form Video Journalism and Storytelling Through Sound classes were nominated in eight categories. Professor Hastings’ classes produced a newscast called “The Badger Report” which was nominated in categories such as Best Newscast and Best Feature Story. Meanwhile, students from her Long Form Video Journalism and Storytelling Through Sound classes were nominated in categories such as Best Program, Documentary or Special and Best Feature Story.

A variety of other students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison were also nominated for their work at publications such as the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism, The Daily Cardinal and The Badger Herald. Winners of contest awards, either gold, silver or bronze, will be announced at the Milwaukee Press Club’s Gridiron Awards Dinner at the InterContinental Hotel in Milwaukee on May 11.
