Poynter seeks a talented journalist and radio/podcast/news enthusiast to provide editorial production assistance to the Poynter Center for Ethics & Leadership, the NPR Public Editor and Poynter’s newsroom.

You’ll get paid to listen to NPR, brainstorm column and newsletter ideas with the NPR Public Editor, interface with the NPR audience, research and write responses to critics and post the NPR Public Editor newsletter and columns. You’ll also work with Poynter’s newsroom to shape and publish articles and newsletters, and research and write items for the NPR newsletter and for Poynter.org as time permits. Among your main responsibilities will be managing the systems and production flow for emails to NPR’s Public Editor, publishing items in the content management systems of both NPR and Poynter.org, and building and sending newsletters in SalesForce and MailChimp. In addition, you’ll manage the NPR Public Editor social media accounts.

We are looking for someone who reads and listens to a wide variety of news sources. From this job, you’ll develop insight into the way news strategies are set at a national organization. You’ll also develop skills as an audience specialist and a media critic. You’ll get opportunities to participate in other Poynter projects and meet journalists from all over the world.

Position Responsibilities

The overall responsibilities for this role include: navigating a wide variety of production systems and software programs, actively seeking out vital, timely information and leads, staying connected to an array of social media platforms, meeting deadlines in a timely and prepared fashion, and communicating with a host of colleagues on a regular basis.

1 to 3 years experience required; Ideal job experience includes newsroom internships, social media responsibilities for a news publication, news or features reporting and/or research responsibilities.

Specific Position Responsibilities

  • Learn and navigate backend production systems, Salesforce inbox and marketing software, WordPress and MailChimp
  • Exhibit persistence in chasing down information and leads
  • Express critical thinking skills at all times, ensuring columns and newsletters connect with the NPR and Poynter audiences
  • Display advanced social media skills, with an emphasis on expanding NPR Public Editor accounts on Instagram, Threads and LinkedIn into tools for both research and connection
  • Deliver clean, clear and fast writing skills
  • Demonstrate reliability and accuracy. Important deliverables, both big and small are vital to this position. Work collaboratively and closely with a team where every member depends on each other is key to this role
  • Communicate effectively; especially when information may affect the team’s ability to meet its deadlines.
  • Ability to listen to many different perspectives and synthesize their point of view with respect and care
  • Hours are generally daytime Monday through Friday, but some evening hours or a later schedule may be needed occasionally.

Position Specifications

1 to 3 years experience, as detailed above

College degree preferred

Experience with social media platforms preferred

Prior experience with production systems and software programs highly desirable

Local candidates or those willing to relocate to Tampa Bay strongly preferred
