Description

The Office of Strategic Communications at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is a team of communication, public relations, marketing, digital, design and creative professionals dedicated to advancing the health of people and communities. We create connections between people, ideas and experiences. We embrace and model integrity, accountability, compassion, innovation, and excellence, and we foster a culture of inclusion, equity and respect for all. Our work promotes transparency and trust. When we succeed, people in our organization and beyond feel informed, included, engaged and inspired.

Internship opportunities include: Research, report, and write news stories, Q&As, press releases, and other editorial content for the award-winning School of Medicine and Public Health web site, med.wisc.edu, which is geared toward a smart, curious lay audience. Collaborate with designers, photographers, and videographers to develop visual content. Contribute to internal and external channels such as social media and newsletters.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Candidates must have demonstrated writing capability and passion for communicating science to the public. The ideal candidate will have interest in assessing a range of source materials for stories, including peer-reviewed research articles. They will be dedicated to honing their skill in the art of interviewing subject matter experts; have good time management practices in a deadline-driven environment; establish effective rapport with editors, mentors and team members; and be committed to ethical communication practices. Experience or interest in visual storytelling is a plus, as this role will be working directly with digital, multimedia and design professionals.

Required Qualifications: Strong background in scientific, biomedical, public health, science communication, journalism, strategic communication or related fields and a flair for crafting impactful stories about science for a nonscientific audience. Cover letter and 2 to 3 writing samples must be submitted with application.
