Rowan Calyx joined the staff as an Administrative Assistant III (administrative support) in 2013. He facilitates administrative processes, focusing on daily operations, including department purchasing, event planning, room scheduling, key distribution, travel arrangements, reimbursements, maintenance requests, and space organization.
Rowan serves as a UW-Madison HIB (Hostile and Intimidating Behavior) liaison. HIB liaisons are members of the University community who have volunteered to serve as points of contact for those who have experienced, have witnessed, or have questions about hostile and intimidating behavior. His role is to listen to those with questions and concerns and direct folks to appropriate campus resources.
He was a member of the 2020 cohort of the Learning Communities for Institutional Change & Excellence (LCICE) for diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and justice work.
Before joining the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC), he
- served in various administrative roles from ANSI and ISO standards development coordination to cemetery management
- created and edited newsletters, books, technical documents, websites, training documentation and annual reports
- trained others in job skills, multiple computer programs and sexuality/gender/spirituality topics
- planned international events for both technical conferences and spiritual communities
- made a mean latte as a former barista
Rowan earned his bachelor’s degrees in Theatre and English from Cardinal Stritch University, his MBA from the University of Phoenix and his Level II Tantra Yoga teacher certification from TantraNovaÒ Institute in Chicago, Illinois.
