Admission to the J-School is competitive. Typically the school admits between 50 and 55 percent of students who apply in any given semester. Students who are not admitted can re-apply the following term; with re-applications about 75 percent of students who apply to the School are admitted in time to graduate in a normal four-year schedule. Don’t be discouraged if you aren’t accepted on your first attempt. Factors that may affect your chances include: an unusually strong applicant pool; lack of communications background such as work in student media or activity in J-School-affiliated student organizations; lower grades; or additional chances to apply due to freshman/sophomore status. Consider applying again.
If you aren’t admitted, make an appointment to see an undergraduate advisor, who can help you determine why you weren’t admitted and where your application can be improved. Appointments are available by calling the J-School office at (608) 263-4898. We wish you the best and hope to see you in our School.
