Description

The collaborative home of energy research and education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, the Wisconsin Energy Institute is working on one of the most critical challenges of our time – the transition toward new, clean energy systems and solutions. WEI is led by scientists and engineers committed to crossing traditional research boundaries in order to make major breakthroughs in the way we source and use energy. WEI fosters projects across disciplines, prepares the energy leaders of today and tomorrow, and enhances public understanding of energy issues.

As a Wisconsin Energy Institute student intern, you’ll be communicating about cutting-edge research in clean energy, a field with important stories for varied audiences. You’ll hone invaluable skills for communicating complex ideas to general audiences as well as faculty, staff, and students. You’ll have the chance to connect the stories of energy, our environment, and those passionate about energy issues.

Duties:
• Research and write content for internal and external communications projects related to energy research on campus
• Update websites with articles, images, announcements, and multimedia content
• Draft and publish email newsletters
• Assist with promoting WEI news and events on social media sites

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• An enthusiasm for discovery and telling stories
• Strong writing and editing skills
• Curiosity about people and science
• Commitment to advancing equity, promoting diversity, and practicing inclusion
• Familiarity with maintaining websites and email marketing campaigns is a plus
• Experience or interest in multimedia storytelling (audio, video, and/or photo) is a plus

You don’t need all the skills listed above to apply for this job, just the desire to learn them and to contribute to a collaborative communications team.

Qualifications:
Our ideal candidate is a storyteller with strong writing skills and curiosity about science and the people who practice it. Experience in news reporting or writing for general audiences is preferred, but not required. Most importantly, you are passionate about growing as a storyteller, learning about science, and developing new skills. We encourage rising sophomores and juniors to apply.
